Gardening

DSCN3010

I’ve decided to add a gardening section – so that I can track my progress (hopefully there will be progress!)

When we moved into this house in 2005 (it’s an old farmhouse with a couple of acres) I started gardening.  It’s a hobby that I’ve always wanted to pursue, but living in an NY apartment for many years didn’t allow it.   Then we lived on Shelter Island for about 5 years (east end of Long Island) where the gardens are very beautiful, but I was catering then and as the gardening/catering seasons were the same, that didn’t really work out either.  So, when we arrived in NC, with a couple of acres in which to dig, I started gardening.  I completed the Master Gardening program with the Forsyth County Extension Service, completed my volunteer hours and started digging, planting, hauling and made some progress by creating a sunny garden and starting to shape a shade garden – mostly perennials, with some herbs.

In 2010 we moved back to Connecticut for 2 years and rented our home – no gardener on the premises.  Upon return in April 2012, I was greeted with a total mess!  The polk weeds, wild raspberries and many other invasive types had had their way with my little bit of earth.  It was all I could do to just clear it out a little before the summer hit and it was just to hot to make more progress.

Soon Spring 2013 will arrive, and I have started to clear out the mess in earnest, finding things I had forgotten and making room for others.  I figured this would be a good place to record my progress and get suggestions from fellow gardeners.

And I hope it prompts me to get moving more in the garden.
